In
the late 1870s, Cromwell Cottage was built in Cromwell Street,
"between the river and the church". The Cottage was built
in the mid-Victorian Gothic Revival style and is a two storey house of a
timber frame construction on a sandstone base.
The house was used as a family home for over a hundred years. The first family to live here had the luxury of servants to assist in the household. A system of bell pulls was used to summon the servants from the back of the house to the formal rooms at the front; the remnants of the system were discovered in the ceiling of the front parlour during recent refurbishment. The front parlour was used for meeting and entertaining family visitors in that curiously formal way that was part of Victorian life. The parlour is now the Gold Room. This ensuite bedroom has an antique iron double bed. There are bedside lamps, a clock radio, remote control TV, tea and coffee making facilities and the bed is fitted with an electric blanket and doona. The room is fitted with air-conditioning.

The
original family room is the first room on the right off the Entrance
Hall. This was the family lounge which, with its bow window at the
front and large brick fireplace at the back, was a bright and cheerful room
where the family could gather and relax. The fireplace was obscured
for many years by built-in cupboards. Today, the fireplace has been
revealed and the original wooden floor has been restored. This room is
now used as the Dining Room where you will enjoy a great breakfast from our
excellent menu.

The
original dining room is now the Red
Room. This is a
generously proportioned room with a cast iron fireplace and wooden
mantlepiece. The family used this room for all meals and countless
family celebrations - over a hundred Christmas and Easter dinners and
countless birthdays and anniversaries have marked the passing of the years.
This ensuite room has a cast iron four-poster bed and a cast iron single bed. There are bedside lamps, a clock radio, remote control TV, tea and coffee making facilities and the beds are fitted with electric blankets and doonas. The room is fitted with air-conditioning.

A staircase leads upstairs to the original sleeping
accommodation. The family bedrooms in Victorian homes were located on
the upper floor to ensure privacy for the family. Today, there are two
bedrooms at the top of the stairs - the Yellow Room and The Blue Room - and
there is a telephone for guests located in a small lounge area.

The Yellow
Room overlooks the street at
the front. This ensuite room has a cast iron double bed. There
is also a couch, bedside lamps, remote control TV, clock radio, tea and
coffee making facilities and the bed is
fitted with an electric blanket and doonas.

The Blue Room
has a view down the Derwent River. This ensuite room has a cast iron
double bed and two cast iron single beds. There are bedside lamps,
remote control TV, clock radio, tea and coffee making facilities and the
beds are fitted with electric blankets and doonas.

The Green
Room overlooks the rear
garden. This ensuite room has a cast iron double bed. There is
also a couch, bedside lamps, remote control TV, clock radio, tea and coffee
making facilities and the bed is
fitted with an electric blanket and doonas.
There is an imposing walnut tree in the rear garden. This tree was planted by the first family to live in Cromwell Cottage and it has now reached a venerable age and an impressive size. Each year, for over a hundred years, the tree has produced an abundant crop of fine walnuts. At the foot of the tree are a few whale bones which like Cromwell Cottage itself, are a reminder of other days and other lives. |
